3091 ROMANIA (Cluj) - The Pharmacy History Collection from National Museum of Transylvanian History in Cluj-Napoca
The National Museum of Transylvanian History is a history and archaeology museum in Cluj-Napoca, and features a permanent exhibition, as well as temporary exhibitions, and Pharmacy History Collection (rom) - this last opened in the Hintz House, the building of the first pharmacy in the city (16th century), documented since 1573. At the origin of the collection is a collection of the professor Iuliu Orient (1869-1940), which includes various Transylvanian pharmaceutical objects, exhibited since in 1904.
The professor donated the collection to the museum, this being completed with a collection of history of medicine, and over time they were added other valuable donations that describe the history of the Transylvanian pharmacy since the 16th century. In the access hall can be seen a map of the pharmacies that were certified in Transylvania from the end of the 15th century to the 18th century, and next to the map is the bust of prof. Bologa, VL, (1892-1971), who founded this museum in 1954.
The structure of a Transylvanian medieval pharmacy was similar to that existing in other European countries of those times. It had a dispensary (the room where the drugs were sold), a room for the storage of the raw materials used for the production of medicines, as well as the medicaments produced, and a laboratory (the space for the production of drugs through various technologies). For this purpose, pharmacists have been inspired by various pharmacopoeias and old books.
